The Hague will open a new visitors center during the Binnenhof renovation

8 September 2023

The Hague – In November, a new visitor center about the Binnenhof will open in the heart of The Hague, at the location Plaats 22. In the Binnenhof Renovation Information Center, visitors will soon be able to find out everything about the progress of the renovation of the Binnenhof, the archaeological discoveries in the Binnenhof and the 800-year history of the complex.

The Binnenhof Renovation Information Center was realized by the Central Government Real Estate Agency (RVB), which is responsible for the renovation of the Senate and House of Representatives, the Council of State and the Ministry of General Affairs.

The Hague & Partners, the marketing & acquisition organization of The Hague, will provide staff at the Binnenhof Renovation Information Center. The Hague & Partners has extensive experience in providing information to visitors. Not only online via denhaag.com, but also offline with The Hague Info Store (THIS) – the tourist office at Central Station – and with the coordination of the Embassy of The Hague; the pool of volunteers who friendly guide visitors around the city. In addition, The Hague & Partners will focus on creating brand awareness of the Information Center and promoting visits to the center.

Renovation

The Binnenhof has been the center of Dutch politics for centuries and one of the most famous sights in The Hague. Its origins date back to the construction of a castle by the counts of Holland, who had their residence there since the thirteenth century. Even today, the Prime Minister, the highest political administrator in the Netherlands, has his office in the 'Torentje' (Tower).

The renovation of the Binnenhof started in September 2021. The Binnenhof complex includes approximately 4,000 rooms, rooms, halls, corridors, attics and cellars. The total floor area is almost 90,000 square meters. The buildings are largely monumental. The renovation is urgently needed to give everyone a safe and healthy workplace again. Moreover, the Binnenhof complex must be and remain easily accessible.

The renovation of the Binnenhof ensures the preservation of 800 years of cultural heritage. After the renovation, the users of the Binnenhof can again work in a responsible, sustainable and modern way.

Special

The Binnenhof Renovation Information Center opens at Place 22 and is free to visit. In the visitor center you will soon find news and current affairs surrounding the renovation, information about the history of the Binnenhof, archaeological finds and other interesting facts. The Binnenhof Renovation Information Center will remain open until the end of the renovation, expected in 2028.

Sander Hanenberg: “We are pleased that we have been commissioned by the Central Government Real Estate Agency to provide information to visitors to the Binnenhof Renovation Information Center. This way, despite the renovation of one of the largest crowd pullers in The Hague, we can still let visitors experience something of the Binnenhof.”

Peter van Leeuwen, incoming program director of the Binnenhof Renovation, says: “In the Information Center, visitors can experience how extensive and special the renovation is, learn more about the history of the Binnenhof and view the archaeological finds from the 800-year history of the complex. Thanks to the collaboration with The Hague & Partners, we can cordially invite everyone to visit us five days a week.”

The Binnenhof Renovation Information Center will be festively opened in November. It will then be open Wednesday through Sunday.
