The Hague Royal City Route now accessible to wheelchair users

24 September 2020

The Hague Marketing Bureau, Stichting Voorall and the municipality of The Hague have joined forces and put together a city route that takes people with disabilities along royal highlights. This special 'Royal Wheelchair Route' will be festively opened on Thursday 24 September.

Grand opening

The starting shot was given by the municipality of The Hague, alderman for Care, Youth and Public Health Kavita Parbhudayal, Marco Esser - director The Hague Marketing Bureau and Wim Carabain - director Voorall, at the statue of Willem van Oranje on the Plein in The Hague. After the starting shot, city host Remco Dörr and Voorall director Wim Carabain took the guests along the route in golden wheelchairs, decorated with historical stories from the city host at each point of interest.

The Hague inclusive
With this wheelchair route, The Hague, the royal city by the sea, is increasingly profiling itself as an inclusive city where everyone can participate. The Hague is the first city where such a route, supplemented with information about wheelchair access for visiting the royal sites, is available free of charge for people with reduced mobility. The route has been carefully composed and tested by two people in a wheelchair. They paid attention to whether the route is good for people who are less mobile, what the field of vision is at a lower level and whether sights that say they are wheelchair-friendly are really accessible with a wheelchair. Route tester Inge v.d. Fores; “There are many city walks to do in the city, but if you are dependent on a wheelchair you can never go along, because there is always a point in between that you cannot pass with a wheelchair. We are taken into account with this route! I can do it with my kids. This is not possible with a standard walking route ”. Route tester Ed Boonstoppel; “I made sure you could easily reach everything. It is an old city center, but despite that a lot of things are easily accessible. This route makes it possible for people in a wheelchair to discover new places in the city. Thanks to the extensive description on the website, you get background information which makes the experience complete ”.

The royal wheelchair route can be found on the website denhaag.com/koninklijk. The flyer can be picked up free of charge at The Hague Info Store, the location of VVV The Hague.

The Hague and the week of accessibility
In addition to the royal wheelchair route, The Hague Marketing Bureau, in collaboration with Stichting Voorall, will launch the website denhaag.com/nl/accessible-den-haag in the week of accessibility from 5 to 9 October. In addition to this 'Royal Wheelchair Route', a guided walk for people with a visual impairment has been developed.
