Sweet temptations in The Hague: art you can eat

2 June 2025

The Hague – Indulge in an irresistible blend of colourful art and sugary delights. Three exhibitions at prominent city locations bring together flavour, form and temptation in a surprising cultural triptych. Especially for art lovers, sweet-tooths, and culture enthusiasts: The Hague serves it up on a silver platter.

At Museum Voorlinden, designer Simone Post creates a marvellous world made entirely of sugar in her solo exhibition. Using meringues, marshmallows and candy necklaces, she reconstructs her childhood home – complete with cuddly toys, a bunk bed, and her mother’s sewing room. Everything you see – and smell – in Sweet Memories, from the carpet to the washing machine, is made of sweets. The immersive installation takes visitors back to a childlike dreamworld where anything still seems possible.

Just a few kilometres away, Kunstmuseum Den Haag delves into the rich history of desserts with its exhibition Grand Dessert – The History of the Pudding. From the classic Dutch “vlaflip” to royal dessert buffets, sugar sculptures to jelly moulds – through cookbooks, baking tins, porcelain services, paintings and more, you'll explore the delectable world of desserts. A special sensory addition enhances the experience: fragrances. Inhale the spicy aromas of spekkoek (Indonesian layer cake), baklava, or Persian ice cream.

For a more playful exhibition of volume, head to Lange Voorhout, where you'll find the giant inflatable sculptures of BlowUp Art X Pulchri Studio. One standout is The Ever-Beating Calendar by John Körmeling – a monumental yellow doughnut illustrating a 19-year cycle. This artwork also inspired the BlowUpcino, a cappuccino topped with a striking handcrafted meringue. Like the artwork itself, this creation is a feast for both the eye and the camera.

The BlowUpcino is exclusively available during BlowUp Art X Pulchri Studio at the following locations:

  • Hotel Des Indes
  • Brasserie Mauritshuis
  • Escher in the Palace
  • The Royal Theatre
  • Gallery61
  • Pulchri Studio

This sweet delight for your tastebuds is the perfect finale to a unique cultural journey through The Hague, where flavour, aesthetics and wonder take centre stage.

On 4 and 11 June, free lunchtime lectures will be held by the artists of BlowUp Art X Pulchri Studio at the Open Pavilion of West Den Haag on Lange Voorhout. Take a seat beneath the trees and be inspired. Admission is free.
