The Hague Turns Orange with Launch of “Oranje NasSaus” During King’s Night

The Hague – The Hofstad is gaining a striking new flavor. During King’s Night, the “Oranje NasSaus” will be launched on the Lange Voorhout. The sauce, which has a fresh and slightly spicy taste, was created by The Hague local Marco Ratsma and is a playful tribute to The Hague as a royal city.

The idea for the sauce originated three years ago. “I kept hearing the term ‘Oranje Nassaus’ on television and thought: why doesn’t this actually exist yet? In the Hofstad, where everything revolves around the royal family, it felt like a missed opportunity,” says initiator Marco Ratsma.

Together with a chef friend, a recipe was developed. After extensive tastings, the sauce proved to be widely versatile: from fries and snacks to more refined dishes such as scallops and duck breast. “Only with salami it’s not a match, which immediately led to the payoff: tasty on everything, except salami,” Ratsma adds.

The launch took some time. Finding a suitable production partner proved to be complex. Ratsma: “It’s not just about taste—it has to feel right. The right partners, the right timing—and above all, enjoying what you create. That fits The Hague: a city with allure, but also room for a wink.”

Ratsma and his partner John Waayer are currently producing the sauce on a small scale themselves, initially only for local hospitality businesses. The sauce can already be ordered directly via the website oranjenassaus.nl. Ratsma: “With further scaling, distribution through hospitality wholesalers will follow, and after that we’ll start looking toward the consumer market.”

The Oranje NasSaus will be launched on Sunday, April 26, between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, ahead of the free music festival The Life I Live, where visitors will receive a royal welcome. After the unveiling, fries with Oranje NasSaus will be free of charge until 7:00 PM.

Ratsma: “How great is it to introduce a sauce right here during King’s Night that gives The Hague’s royal feeling a playful twist?” During King’s Night and King’s Day, Oranje NasSaus will be available at multiple locations across the city, presenting itself as “the king of sauces.”
