The Hague kicks off the beach season with a new boulevard and festivals in Scheveningen, Kijkduin, and the city center.
The Hague – With the opening of the renovated boulevard in Scheveningen and festive programming throughout the city, the City by the Sea celebrates the arrival of spring. Just before the Easter weekend, on Thursday, April 2, the Scheveningen boulevard will be officially reopened. In April and May, events such as KidsFest, KijkduinFest, and SummerFest will follow. In The Hague, you don’t have to choose: here you can experience both city and beach in a single day.
Renovation of Scheveningen Boulevard completed
An important innovation this beach season is the Scheveningen boulevard. Over a length of 600 meters, the seaside stretch between De Pier and Museum Beelden aan Zee has been made greener and wider, with improved connections between the boulevard and the beach. Beneath the natural stone lies future-proof craftsmanship, including smart solutions for cables, pipelines, and rainwater management. Beach pavilions have been repositioned, and there is now more space for public events.
A highlight is the large new staircase at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus, including a new location for the “Army and Navy” monument. This monument was ceremonially unveiled in 1921 by Queen Wilhelmina and, more than 100 years later, has been given a new prominent place on the boulevard. All the “Sculptures by the Sea” fairy-tale statues have also been returned to their original positions.
Festive start
On Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, the free event Kidsfest aan Zee will take place in Scheveningen, featuring music, sports, games, and entertainment for children and the whole family. Performers include Fenna Ramos, Juf Roos, and POPZ. All children will also dance the “Haagse shuffle” together. This event not only marks the opening of the beach season but also celebrates the renewed boulevard. In May, events such as the European Robotic League, a Hague Freedom Meal by the sea, and Aircooled Scheveningen. will follow.
KijkduinFest puts the family seaside resort on the map
At the beginning of May, festivities along The Hague coast continue. On May 2, KijkduinFest begins: a festival spanning multiple weekends. It offers a varied program of culture, sports, and music. During the festive opening, the seaside resort will transform into a lively festival ground. On the stage next to the carousel, performances by local dance and music schools will be followed by live music and DJ sets. Visitors can also enjoy food and drinks from local entrepreneurs.
On Sunday, May 10, the Trail Kijkduin takes place, with Haag Atletiek organizing various trails for children, beginners, and advanced participants along the beach, dunes, and Ockenburgh. The day focuses on sport and fun, with a festive atmosphere including a DJ, medals, and a joint award ceremony for all participants.
SummerFest
From May 23 to May 25, the connection between city and beach will be strengthened with SummerFest. During the Pentecost weekend, The Hague city center will be all about summer, fashion, music, and conviviality. For four days, visitors can enjoy a mix of live music, surprising performances, stylish shopping, and a varied selection of food and drinks. From street musicians to energetic DJs, the city will be buzzing with summer vibes.
