The Hague host for the Gender Justice in International Criminal Law Conference

The two-day event focuses on improving accountability for gender-based crimes committed during war, conflict and genocide. 

The conference is organised by the Gender Justice Practitioner Hub, Legal Action Worldwide, Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice and the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague. It brings together professionals working in international criminal law with survivors and civil society organisations to exchange knowledge and develop practical approaches to gender justice. 

This year's programme pays special attention to developments in the Asia-Pacific region. Sessions examine accountability efforts in countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Myanmar, where conflict and political repression continue to disproportionately affect women and girls. Speakers will discuss how international courts, national legal systems and civil society can work together to improve access to justice. 

Alongside regional case studies, the conference explores new developments affecting international justice. Topics include the use of artificial intelligence in documenting international crimes, accountability for climate-related harm, crimes targeting LGBTQI+ communities, and the role of people's tribunals where formal legal mechanisms are absent. 

The organisers have also placed survivors at the centre of the programme. Their experiences have helped shape the conference, with a strong focus on practical solutions that can improve investigations, prosecutions and access to justice. Voices from the Global South and Global Majority are given particular prominence throughout the event. 

The conference takes place at the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague and will be accessible both in person and online. By bringing together experts from around the world, the event reinforces The Hague's role as an international meeting place for organisations working on peace, justice and accountability.
