How a startup in The Hague is protecting our planet and its people
Using satellite images and geospatial innovation, Space4Good helps organisations tackle environmental and humanitarian challenges around the world. Founder Alexander Gunkel launched the company after realising that satellite technology could be used for more than research and defence applications. Today, Space4Good works with NGOs, governments, and businesses to monitor issues ranging from illegal deforestation to the impact of natural disasters on local communities.
Using satellites to monitor social and environmental impact
Instead of relying only on field inspections, Space4Good uses satellite images, geospatial analysis, and predictive AI modelling to monitor large areas remotely. This allows organisations to detect changes that may otherwise go unnoticed.
The company supports projects focused on nature-based solutions such as sustainable agriculture and forestry. They develop applications that offer insights into deforestation, natural disasters, carbon or biodiversity, and provide actionable reports for the whole impact ecosystem. Forestry companies can use the information to guide forest rangers, while humanitarian organisations can better understand how floods, droughts, or conflicts affect vulnerable communities.

An “impact-first” business model
Rather than focusing only on commercial contracts, the company prioritises projects linked to sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Its clients include environmental organisations, research institutions, and humanitarian agencies.
The company recently partnered with the international engineering organisation RINA to provide independent monitoring and verification of the environmental impact of large-scale construction projects.

Space4Good follows an ethical code that guides how its technology and data are used. “We do not support projects that contribute to environmental harm, human rights violations, or unlawful surveillance activities,” said Gunkel. “To create positive social and environmental change, we need to lead by example.”
